Common Misconceptions about NEET Passing Marks

There is a common misconception among candidates regarding the NEET 2025 passing marks. It is the belief that securing 50% of the total marks is enough to qualify for the NEET UG exam. However, the passing marks in NEET out of 720 are not simply calculated as 50% of the score. Instead, they follow a very different evaluation process. Candidates assume that the passing marks would be 750/2 = 360. But in reality, this represents the percentile rather than the percentage of marks scores.

It is important to note that percentile and percentage are two different except in the context of NEET qualifying criteria. For example, if the NEET 2025 qualifying marks are set at 50%, it doesn't mean that the candidate has scored 50% of the total. It rather means that the candidate needs to outperform at least 50% of all NEET applicants.

Moreover, the qualifying marks will differ from the previous year since the passing marks vary annually. However, candidates must aim to score higher than the specified passing marks to increase their chances of admission to top medical colleges in India.

Factors Influencing NEET Passing Marks

The passing marks are expected to vary this year. There are several factors impacting the NEET passing scores. Some of the factors are mentioned below:

  • NEET is among India's staff is the medical entrance exam. If the exam is difficult,, the passing marks will be lower. On the other hand, if the exam is easy, then it results in a higher cutoff.
  • NEET qualifying cutoff is also influenced by the number of students appearing for the exam. The higher number of candidates generally leads to a higher cutoff.
  • Candidates from socially and educationally weaker backgrounds fall under reserved categories. They are provided relaxation in the qualifying marks as per the NEET 2025 reservation policy.
  • The overall performance of candidates plays an important role in determining the minimum qualifying marks. If the last number of students achieve high scores, the passing marks will also increase.
  • The total number of seats available in medical and dental courses also directly affects the Qualifying marks. The highest seat availability generally results in lower passing marks on the other hand, if there are limited seats, there will be higher cutoffs.
