The students studying UG and PG courses in social sciences, humanities, math, physics, engineering etc. are eligible to apply for IIT internships in engineering, management and research streams.
The internship at IIT is of 6-8 weeks duration in the month of May to July and the stipend paid every month is in the range of INR 5-15k.
IIT Roorkee: Summer internship opportunities called SPARK is provided to the 2nd and 3rd year students at IIT Roorkee.
The registration process starts in the month of January and the candidates can apply by filling the basic information needed along with the resume which helps them understand the need of research and interested areas.
The internship conducted at IIT Roorkee is of 6-8 weeks duration and provide a stipend of more than INR 2.5k per week.
IIT Ropar: The students studying UG and PG courses in computer science engineering, material and energy, biomedical, chemical, electrical, electronics, mechanical, civil and non-technical courses like chemistry, physics, math, social science and humanities can apply for internship at IIT Ropar in the month of March for 5-8 weeks duration.
IIT Gandhinagar: Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) is the summer internship program conducted at IIT Gandhinagar. The aim of SRIP is to work on research projects with all the students and faculties all over the country.
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students at UG level and 1st year students at PG level are eligible for the internship at IIT Gandhinagar for 8 weeks duration.
IIT Bombay: The students at present in the 6th semester or 2nd year are provided with summer internship. The students in 3rd and 4th semesters based on the performance in academics are provided with internship at IIT Bombay.
The shortlisting of candidates is done on the basis of technical skills and performance in academics. The students who are selected must take the programming test in C which is online.
IITB Research Internship Awards are provided to the students in 3rd and 4th year at UG level and 2nd year at PG level. The internship application starts from August and the students are provided with internship from December to June for 4-6 months.
IIT Guwahati: The 3rd year students of engineering can apply for internship in the month of February at IIT Guwahati. The official website for each department can be visited by the students for internship and the application form can be filled online.
IIT Hyderabad: The departments like electrical engineering and computer science engineering at IIT Hyderabad provide internship opportunities from May to July for 8 weeks duration. The 2nd year students and 3rd year students of B.E/B/Tech in electrical, electronics and computer science can apply for the internship.
IIT Delhi: Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) and Global Internship Program in Engineering, Design and Innovation (GIPEDI) are the two internship programs offered at IIT Delhi.
The internship opportunity is provided to the students in electrical sciences such as instrumentation, telecom, information technology, computer science, electronics and electrical engineering. The internship program is conducted in four batches in December to January, July to December, May to July and January to May.
The students at UG level with 2 years of education can take the help of faculties at IIT Delhi to carry out the research activities. It is an internship program of 8-12 weeks duration where only 20 students are selected and the fellowship offered to the students is nearly INR 500 per week.
IIT Internship: How to apply
Step I: The interested students can apply for the internship for a specific department at various IIT in careers website.
Step II: The students need to email to the faculties at IIT who have experience in the research activities of your interest and request them to become intern. The students need to create a resume with details about research interests and education qualifications and contribution to the project.
Step III: The students can apply for summer research fellowship for two months duration through National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian National Science Academy and Indian Academy of Science (IAS). The application for summer research fellowship will be available in the month of November and can be submitted with the cover letter.
Step IV: The internship opportunity at IIT is posted online regularly to help the students understand the basic requirements of internship.
What is next after applying for IIT Internship?
The screening is done in the first stage of IIT recruitment based on the cover letter and purpose of internship. The candidates are selected for research internship based on the educational background and performance, interest in research and previously worked projects.
The students who are selected are called for face to face/ skype/ telephonic interview with the main professor. The interview questions asked by the professor is mainly based on the skill set and research interest.
