Assam University has updated its admission process for UG courses for the academic year 2025-25. The university will no longer require Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for UG admission (for 100% of seats). Instead, students can apply using their Class 12 marks too.
In the new process, 80% of UG seats will be filled based on 12th marks, while 20% will be reserved for students with CUET scores. According to the University Management, this change is intended to give local students more opportunities. The new process is only for UG courses; postgraduate (PG) course admission will still require CUET scores.
Shubham Roy, the president of the Assam University Student Union (AUSU) and a member of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) party, announced the news online. Assam University management later confirmed this announcement.
The change in the admission process was driven by AUSU's efforts to create better educational opportunities for local students. Recently, numerous students from the Barak Valley and other rural areas faced difficulties taking the CUET exam due to a lack of nearby exam centers. This challenge has prevented numerous local students from pursuing further education at the university. In reaction, AUSU took a stand and advocated for eliminating the CUET score requirement, working with the university administration and government authorities to make this change happen.
