Madurai Kamaraj University is a State University founded in 1966. It is recognized as a university with the potential for excellence in "Teaching, Research, and Outreach." As a result, the University has received "A++" accreditation from NAAC. Besides, MKU is one of the 15 Top UNiversoties in India to obtain the "University with Potential Excellence Status" by UGC. Initially, it was established as Madurai University. Later in 1978, it was renamed to honour K Kamraj, former chief minister of Madras (Present Tamil Nadu)
There are 121 Madurai Kamaraj University affiliated Colleges, which comprise 16 aided colleges, 24 autonomous institutes, 1 MKU College, 5 MKU Evening Colleges and 4 constituent colleges, 57 Self Financed colleges and 14 approved colleges. Besides, it comprises 20 Schools and a total of 77 notable Departments. In its many departments, the University provides 41 postgraduate, 35 M.Phil., and 17 diploma, postgraduate diploma, and certificate programmes. There are now 2428 registered students and research scholars.
The University firmly supports participatory and decentralized governance. A forward-thinking decision has given a few schools academic and administrative autonomy. The University has developed connections with the local community through its numerous outreach initiatives. The University is transitioning from the status of a University with Potential for Excellence to a University of Excellence, as evidenced by its connectedness and exposure on the national and international levels.

Madurai Kamaraj University Course Admissions
Postgraduate, M.Phil., certificates, UG, diploma, and postgraduate diploma programmes are offered by MKU. Candidates are accepted into UG Courses at Madurai Kamaraj University based on their performance on the merit system. At the same time, those interested in PG studies must pass the Madurai Kamaraj University entrance exam before proceeding to the GD/PI rounds, which are held on campus for some programmes. A student can apply for a course by visiting the University's website or contacting its admission office.
For UG Courses, 10+2 with a required aggregate mark is necessary. Candidates will be selected based on their academic merit. Based on 10+2 scores, Madurai Kamaraj University Merit list will be created.
At the PG level, the University provides MBA, MA, M.Sc, M.Ed, M.P.Ed, and M.LI.I.Sc, and M.Com programmes in a variety of specializations. The minimal requirement for eligibility is a bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline. The institution administers entrance exams for some courses, but admittance to others is solely purely on merit. For Madurai Kamaraj University MBA, candidates can apply on the basis of TANCET scores.

Library - A modernized central library for the University houses 300839 books, 15,000 e-journals, 3,000 e-books, and 55,000 references and textbooks. The 50-node INFONET centre, one Gbps internet connection, and smart classrooms have improved ICT-enabled teaching and learning.

- Dance Club - Besides its academics, MKU has several campus clubs and organizations. The dance troop is one of the most popular, with over 100 members performing various dancing styles.
- Music Club: The club hosts various events throughout the year, including massive intracampus performances and challenging musical competitions.
- c Hostel - The Kavimani hostel has 60 rooms, while the Bharathi hostel has 108. The hostels at Bharathidasan and Thiruvalluvar feature 59 rooms.
