IIT Dhanbad is formerly known as the Indian School of Mines (ISM Dhanbad). Initially, it was started as an institution to offer education in mineral and mining sciences. Today, it has fully-fledged into a technical institution with several academic departments. ISM IIT Dhanbad is situated in the mineral region of India, the city of Dhanbad. As an ISM, it came into existence in 1926. Henceforth, it is the 3rd oldest Institute that got converted into an IIT. (After IIT Roorkee, IIT (BHU) Varanasi). On 25 May 2016, PM Narendra Modi approved amending the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961 to convert ISM Dhanbad to IIT Dhanbad.
The ranking of IIT Dhanbad according to NIRF 2021 is 26 for the Overall Category. In addition, it has secured 11th rank among Top Engineering Colleges in India. In addition, IIT Dhanbad Mining Engineering has been ranked 26th in the QS World University Rankings. And it is India's 2nd Highest Ranked Institution for Mineral and Mining Subjects.
IIT Dhanbad offers admission to the B Tech at the UG level. M Tech, MSc, and MBA are the PG courses available at IIT Dhanbad. In addition, it offers admission to the dual degree B Tech+M Tech. IIT Dhanbad B Tech Admission
IIT Dhanbad Four-year B Tech is available in 12 different disciplines. The JEE Advanced entrance test determines IIT Dhanbad BTech admission, which JoSAA Counseling follows. For its B. Tech program, IIT Dhanbad charges INR 2.22 lakhs a year. Students must undertake JEE Main to proceed with JEE Advanced. They should satisfy the IIT Dhanbad JEE Main minimum cutoff criteria. M Tech in IIT Dhanbad is available in various specializations. IIT Dhanbad MBA Admission
Department of Management Studies-DMS IIT Dhanbad offers a two-year full-time MBA. It specializes in general MBA and Business Analytics. The Institute conducts a personal interview before considering applicants for admission to the program based on their CAT results. IIT Dhanbad MBA intake is 62.

IIT Dhanbad Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) are offered in four courses and various specialties. An all-India exam and interview are used to select candidates for the IIT Dhanbad Ph.D. (JRF) program.
