Indira Gandhi National Open University established its Regional Center at Shillong, Meghalaya, in 1988 by its 1st Regional Director, Dr. R.V.Vyas, to provide education to the hitherto unreached and promote community participation for local development through life-coping skills through distance learning. The university also aims to provide specific need-based education and training opportunities for continuous professional development and skill upgrading to in-service professionals.
IGNOU’s study center at Laitumkhrah, Tura, Marang, Cherrapunjee, Mawkhar, Khliehriat, Mendipathar, Nongpoh, Jaintia, Umsning, Mawsynram, Shillong, Nongstoin, Tikrikilla, Nongthymmai, Mowkaiaw, Sohkha, Dhankheti, Baghmara, Thadlaskein, Rongkhon, and Mawlai were functioning under Shillong Regional Center, Meghalaya. The university can take higher education to every nook and corner in the state of Meghalaya by establishing Learner Support Centers (LSCs) covering most of the Districts.
IGNOU offers Distance Learning Program in UG, PG, PG Diploma, Diploma, and other certificate courses in Arts, Commerce, Science, Management, Education, Tourism, Journalism, etc. The university also offers management courses like MBA, DIM, PGDIM, PGDHRM, PGDFM, PGDOM, PGDMM, and PGDFMP, which are highly preferred in the country
