The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), came into existence in 1960 and is a public engineering university at Surathkal Mangalore. It is one of India's 31 National Institutes of Technology and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by India's Government. It is a top engineering and science institute in the state of Karnataka. It has a suburban campus close to the Arabian Sea. National Highway 66 runs through the campus and is the major access mode. It is ranked 22 in the country according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework engineering rankings.
