The Directorate of Distance Education was set up in 1996 to provide higher education through distance learning using various multimedia tools. Unlike the regular formal education system, distance education has a different goal: to reach people who couldn't access traditional education and include those who were left out. Tripura University has consistently followed the guidelines of the UGC (University Grants Commission) and the Distance Education Council, New Delhi.
